Waste Film Recycling Challenges and Solutions

Waste film recycling, especially the recycling of post-consumer films (such as plastic bags, packaging films, and agricultural films), is one of the most challenging areas in the entire plastic recycling industry. Its high pollution and low density characteristics place special demands on plastic granulators.

Challenges in Waste Film Recycling:

Films generally have low density and large volume, making them prone to contamination with impurities such as mud, food residues, and label paper. Different types of films (e.g., PE, PP, PVC) may be mixed together, and PVC can release hydrogen chloride during melting, which corrodes machinery and contaminates the entire batch.

Hard impurities like metal and sand can severely wear down the screw and barrel. Organic impurities such as food and paper may carbonize under high temperatures, leading to “black spots” in the pellets, which affect product appearance and performance. Mixing plastics with different melting points can result in uneven melt, unstable extrusion, frequent strand breakage, and even die clogging.

Solutions in Plastic Pelletizing Machine Processes:

1. Forced Compression Feeding System: An additional side-feeding device with a spiral compactor is installed after the standard hopper to pre-compact loose films, significantly improving the main screw’s feeding capacity and conveying efficiency.

2. High-Capacity Filtration System: A continuous filter or a large-area hydraulic automatic screen changer is essential to handle the continuous high load of impurities.

3. Long L/D Ratio Screw: A screw with an L/D ratio ≥ 40:1 is recommended to provide sufficient length for gradual compression, melting, venting, and homogenization of the material.

4. Efficient Venting and Devolatilization: Contaminants and moisture on the film surface generate substantial volatiles when heated, making a powerful vacuum venting system indispensable.

5. Melt Cooling Technology: Due to intense shear during film recycling, the melt temperature can easily become too high. Cooling zones can be set at appropriate barrel positions, or a melt heat exchanger can be used to lower the temperature and prevent material degradation.
